«Sound of Silence» brings us in the past by jumping some 40 years back in time to the counter-culture revolution of sexual freedom and psychedelia- into Soviet-controlled Latvia. Despite its theme of collective anomie, «Sound of Silence» marked the beginning of the Sixties utopianism to which Hermanis returns today for nostalgic inspiration. «Sound of Silence» is indeed silent: a 3hr20min attempt to grasp, with music and gestures but no dialogue, what life might have been like for the generation of Hermanis' parents, before the intensified Cold War hostilities of the early Eighties and the exacerbated economic and cultural stagnation that resulted in the Soviet bloc countries.
