«Theatre of Social Research» Projects Presentation

Alena Shpak and Andrey Dichenko

Premiere — October 1, 2018

What is hierarchy, what is power, and who constructs them? What is self-knowledge, what is ideology, what is individuality and uniqueness? What is free will, what is free choice, and can we really face them? Every stereotype exists in order to protect us from danger. Later, under any type of power these mechanisms begin to work in order to control each other, manipulate each other, take power from each other and delegate responsibility to each other. As a result, giving our power to another person in exchange for safety and comfort, we become victims, become objects, transfer our subjectivity into the hands of others, become repeaters of someone's will, someone's desires and someone's ideas. We lose the ability to create, and this emptiness is filled by those to whom we have transferred this ability. Do they want to do this, is it happening voluntarily? How is it possible that the system associates both of these positions with suffering and the both sides of it are losers? But who is interested in maintaining this system? How can you remain yourself, becoming a part of the system, and how can you change the system without being a part of it?

A new international theatre company based in London, founded by Vladimir Shcherban, award-wining director from Belarus, and Oliver Bennett, British actor and award-winning playwright.

“We are committed to following our hunch, to creating theatre without any barriers — be they cultural, linguistic, political or bureaucratic. Our inaugural show “A Hero Of Our Time” was created in a social housing living room in London, previewed in the underground lounge of a 5 star hotel in Soho, went to the Edinburgh Festival and then to the Arcola Theatre. We are currently working on several new projects, the latest of which is a new play about the Novichok poisoning in Salisbury in 2018. We want to find a new kind of audience and new relationship between artists and the public.”
