Premiere — March 27, 2015
Fifty years after the annexation of Austria by Germany professor Schuster, a thinker and a philosopher, who fled Nazis and left Austria for Oxford, was asked by Vienna Mayor to return to his university. However, the situation in contemporary Vienna is “much worse than fifty years ago”, and homeland turns out to be a “deadly place”.
Thomas Bernhard, the author of the play, chooses one of his favourite entry points: death of a protagonist and the investigation of the details that have led to it. As usual in his plays, the death is a suicide. It opens up a mysterious empty space with enigmatic signs, while the family of the deceased is forced to question them. Bernhard’s language, full of poetry and music, turns the play into a carefully measured overstatement. The art of exaggeration is Bernhard’s instrument in revealing the detailed view of the current-day situation.
